For more than two decades, AES has helped drive the energy sector growth, and it has pioneered advances in many markets, generating global leadership of the industry through innovation and operational excellence.
AES has a leading position in the industry by contributing to a transformation in communities by generating and distributing electricity all over the world. Founded in 1981, the company built its first power plant in 1985 in Texas (USA) and, in 1990, it already had three other power plants in three US States.
In the 90s, AES started generating electricity in the United Kingdom, passing through Argentina, Pakistan, China, Hungry, Brazil and other emergent markets around the world. In 1998, it acquired a minority stake in the first and only electricity privatization in India. In Western Africa and in Central America, AES carried electricity to places that had never had firm energy before. The company is present in prosperous markets all over the world: Qatar, Oman, Sri Lanka, Cameroon, and more recently in Bulgaria, where it is building the only and greatest greenfield investment to date.
Currently, AES is focused on new business areas– such as wind power, climate changes and other areas of alternative energy– and on incrementing its core electricity business. After the acquisition of significant wind power generation assets in the United States, AES completed the construction of its first wind farm in Texas, in 2006. Since then, it has been expanding its wind business in the United Kingdom, France and Bulgaria – some of the markets of most rapid growth in this type of energy generation in Europe. Today, the company has more than 6.000 MW in wind power generation projects under development across the world.
In the course of its history, AES co-workers have always been in advance of changes, as a positive force in the energy sector as well as in the communities where the company operates. With a significant global reach, deep local knowledge and differentiated operational skills, AES will continue to expand in new energy and infrastructure markets all over the world.
