AES entered the Latin American market in 1993 by acquiring the CTSN power plant in Argentina. In a ten-year period, it acquired the main companies in the region, contributing to the development of urban and rural communities. An example of such is AES Eletropaulo – the largest power distributor in the region with almost six million customers that has served its customers for more than 100 years and is one of the energy businesses of greatest performance in Latin America.
In Chile, AES is the second largest power generator. In El Salvador, AES provides electricity to 80% of the country’s energy market, including to rural areas and remote villages that had never had firm energy before. In Argentina, AES is a major private energy generator, producing approximately 12% of the country’s total energy generation capacity. On the other hand, AES three distribution businesses in Argentina serve approximately 750 thousand customers in Buenos Aires. In the Dominican Republic, AES Andres is the latest and largest private power generator in the country. It is a 319 MW gas-fired power plant and a LNG re-gasification terminal.
